Dear Dave Kendall,

I miss you. Do you remember back in 1990, when my best friend Katy and I would send you letters every week, begging you to play the latest Depeche Mode video on 120 Minutes, and how with them, we would always include a drawing of Gumby and Pokey wearing Depeche Mode t-shirts? We watched your show faithfully, always hoping you would read our letters on the air and acknowledge our artistic talents and fantastic musical taste to all the world (or as much of the world was awake and watching at 12:00 a.m. on a Sunday night, which, admittedly, we were not, as we weren’t allowed to stay up that late and thus had to record your show on video tape instead). But you never did. I hear you’re making porn these days. That's pretty pathetic, but I want you to know that I still think of you fondly, and cherish the hope that if I ever happen to run into you somewhere (perhaps while you’re on a break from your busy skin flick schedule), that you’ll remember me as the Gumby Girl and tell me that our drawings were precious to you - as precious as hearing you say things like, “It was my aunt’s carpet, the bastard” was to me.

Much love,
Lara

P.S. I wrote this awhile back, and just now, I looked you up on Wikipedia, and I saw that you're doing this:

Sept. 2008 - - Dave is now hosting "Party 360 with Dave Kendall" on Sirius Satellite Radio's First Wave Channel 22. This airs on Fridays 6 pm - Midnight ET -- "Join Dave Kendall, creator and former host of MTV's 120 Minutes, every Friday as he jump starts your weekend with 360 minutes of your favorite classic alternative party songs."

Way to go! I'm proud of you, Dave.

Expect a letter from me soon...

I'm so lame I don't remember him. Just Matt Pinfield, who you know, went on to host VH1 top 20 or something and basically really let me down.

I don't remember Dave either. Hmmm. And I used to watch a lot of MTV. The only VJ from that era I remember is Ricky Rachman, because I used to love Headbanger's Ball.

I think most people think of Matt Pinfield as the 120 Minutes guy. Dave Kendall only hosted for three years, and then sort of mysteriously disappeared in 1992. For awhile they just had musical guests hosting the show (which was LAME), and I stopped watching it before Matt Pinfield finally came on the scene, so Dave's the only 120 Minutes VJ I ever knew. And God, I loved him!

I totally remember Riki Rachtman! Although I didn't watch Headbanger's Ball all that often. I think that was also the era of Adam Curry and Martha Quinn and Colin Quinn and the Julie Browns (Downtown Julie Brown and the other Julie Brown that did Just Say Julie). Maybe I watched a lot more MTV than you guys did--ha!
